Ralph de la Vega, the president and CEO of AT&T’s mobile and consumer markets, will join Miami executives on Feb. 18 to discuss his new book, “Obstacles Welcome.” The power breakfast meeting is a continuation of a series of events PODER Magazine is sponsoring between influential national and international figures and a select business community in South Florida. The story of his business success and a peek into his innovative acumen is compiled in his first book “Obstacles Welcome.
De la Vega is a leader in the integral wireless business, including smartphones, e-readers, navigation devices, and netbooks. De la Vega also chairs the CTIA, a wireless telecommunications industry trade group that advocates on behalf of its partners “before the Executive Branch, the Federal Communications Commission, Congress, and state regulatory and legislative bodies.” De la Vega also sits on the boards of New York Life Insurance Company, the Georgia Research Alliance, the Boy Scouts of America (where he leads the group’s Hispanic initiatives), and is chairman of Junior Achievement Worldwide.

Latin America: State of the Region.
Latin America, through a series of elections, might undergo significant
change in 2010. Some things to think about moving forward are, what are the
underlying trends emerging from the ballot boxes that will affect business
throughout the continent? Where will things change significantly and where
will the status quo be maintained? Michael Shifter and John Price provide
expert guidance.
Michael Shifter is president of the Inter-American Dialogue. Since 1993, he
has been an adjunct professor of Latin American politics at Georgetown
University's School of Foreign Service. Shifter writes and comments widely
on U.S.-Latin American relations and hemispheric affairs. Since 1996, he has
regularly testified before Congress about U.S. policy towards Latin America.
John Price is an expert in the field of market intelligence in Latin
America. As a managing director of Market Intelligence Services at
Kroll-Info Americas, Mr. Price is a strategic advisor to clients, providing
advice on market positioning, market entry, competitive trends, and
partnering. He is published by leading regional and national journals and
co-edited the book “Can Latin America compete?”
This year will be a pivotal year for Hispanics in the United States. The Census is expected to show a ballooning population, which will affect congressional districts in the future and electoral races in 2010. Spanish-language television will play a substantial role in informing this community, shaping its views and mobilizing its strengths around certain issues. Cesar Conde, the President of Univision Networks, knows more than most about how Spanish-language television can benefit in this scenario.
Conde is a Miami native of Cuban and Peruvian descent. Conde worked in mergers and acquisitions at Salomon Smith Barney, was president of his MBA class at Wharton, and was a White House Fellow under then Secretary of State Colin Powell in 2002. In August he was promoted as president of Univision Networks, adding to his duties the oversight of programming and making him the heir apparent to Univision CEO Joe Uva.
Univision dominates the Spanish-language television marketplace in the United States, where there are about 12.6 million Hispanic households. While English-language broadcasters have seen audiences shrink as viewers spend more time watching cable television, ratings for programs in Spanish are holding steady and in some cases growing. Univision’s local stations in Los Angeles and New York are the top-rated in either language in the country.

Since joining Kroll in 1981, Tommy Helsby has been conducting and managing complex fraud investigations, performing due diligence for transactions and providing litigation support. Cuba: far away and so close.
President Barack Obama has shown greater flexibility in his foreign policy towards Cuba than previous administrations, but Cuba has given him little to show for it. What will break first, the president’s patience or the island nation’s reluctance to change?

She specializes in U.S.-Latin America foreign policy. Sweig is an award-winning author of “Inside the Cuban Revolution” and director of numerous Council-sponsored Task Forces on Latin America.
