Obama makes case for immigration reform
On Thursday the President asked Republicans to put aside partisanship and support immigration legislation that would create a path to citizenship and secure the border.
Obama gave his clearest pro-immigration reform speech at a fitting patriotic venue, American University. He admitted Washington's failure to pass comprehensive reform has lead to a patchwork system that is "broken and dangerous." He called the Arizona anti-immigration law ill-conceived but blamed its emergence on political gridlock in Washington. In this sense, Obama lashed out against Republicans, who he said resort to political posturing.
Obama threw his weight behind a plan to give 11 million undocumented migrants U.S. citizenship, and rejected mass deportations as too costly and logistically impossible. He also said he would up security on the U.S.-Mexico border but provided no details or timetable.
