Hundreds Protest Los Van Van Performance
A popular Cuban salsa band played Sun. in downtown Miami and brought out raw emotions from exiles living in South Florida who showed up to protest
The Cuban Los Van Van popular salsa music band drew hundreds of protesters and thousands of fans to their first concert in Miami since protests of a 1999 show turned violent. The Miami Herald reports that nearly 350 to 400 protesters were outside the downtown concert venue Sun., some carrying signs calling the 4,000 concertgoers traitors and communists. Protesters associate the band with Fidel Castro's communist regime. Protesters threw batteries at concertgoers in Oct. 1999, following weeks of protests by Cuban exiles that believed Cuban artists performing in the U.S. bolstered Castro.
