Opposition Students End Hunger Strike
They'll meet with OAS secretary, Jose Miguel Insulza, who will visit Venezuela in Jan.

The Venezuelan opposition students ended their hunger strike in front of the Organization of American States (OAS) headquarters in Caracas, 18 days after meeting with an official commission of the OAS. Although the students asked for a visit from the executive secretary of the Inter-American Human Rights Commission in order to end the strike, they chose to give in faced with President Hugo Chavez's refusal to allow Canton, considered a political enemy of his, to come. "This strike ends with its goals achieved, it's a gift of hope for all Venezuelans," said student Julio Cesar Reyes, who headed the hunger strike along with various other students in order to protest the state of human rights in Venezuela, including the rights of political prisoners whose existence has been denied by the president. Rivas also announced tha the OAS commission had promised that its secretary general, Miguel Insulza, would meet with them in Jan., but did not give a specific date. "Insulza will make an official visit to Venezuela Jan. 2010 wherein we will have an opportunity to meet with him," said Rivas.
