Colombia and Ecuador Getting Closer
The governments of both nations renewed today their call for a Bi-National Border Commission (Combifron)

This Thurs. in Bogota, Colombia's Defense Minister Gabriel Silva and his Ecuadoran counterpart, Javier Ponce, renewed the Bi-National Border Commission (Combifron), an organism in charge of security and cooperation matters along both nations' borders. The Colombian official said that the reactivation of this mechanism will allow for the reestablishment of the exchange of information and cooperation against delinquents passing between both countries. Ecuador's Defense Minister Javier Ponce announced that next the military attaches would be named as part of the return of bi-national relations. Ponce also said that at the Unasur gathering, the government will seek to approach Colombia and Venezuela with an aim toward reestablishing relations and thereby avoid this sort of internal conflict in the region. The meeting, which was held in the Colombian capital, saw the participation of Ecuador's Security Coordination Minister Miguel Carvajal, and high ranking military and police from both nations. The Commission was inactive since Nov. 2007.
