A New Chapter
The U.S. wants to improve relations with Venezuela

U.S. ambassador to Venezuela, Patrick Duddy, said his government seeks "to improve relations with Venezuela," while also calling on Caracas and Bogota to open a dialogue now at a moment he described as being filled with "high tension". Duddy said Washington has "no aggressive intention" for signing the agreement allowing them to use seven Colombian military bases. "There are no American bases, there haven’t been any and there will be none," said the diplomat, who reiterated that his country only wants to work with Colombia in resolving its internal conflict. The agreement between Colombia and the U.S. military has been criticized by several South American presidents, but especially by Chavez, who decided, since last July, to freeze commercial relations with Colombia because of it.
