Spain Offers Mediation
The Spanish government is willing to mediate to resolve the crisis between Colombia and Venezuela
Latin America's Secretary of State, Juan Pablo de Laiglesia, of the Latin American Affairs Committee of the Senate (the Spanish Parliament’s upper house), announced that the Spanish government wishes to help "ease tensions" between Venezuela and Colombia and has therefore demonstrated a willingness to help both countries find ways toward a peaceful solution through dialogue. The official explained that this announcement comes in response to the Colombian president’s request of Spain to maintain a supportive attitude regarding the tense situation which has developed in recent weeks between the two South American countries. To that end, Laiglesia said the Spanish government is working to help reduce tensions and to establish valid mechanisms, acceptable to both parties, to lesson tensions on a permanent basis.
