Strong Rejection of Espionage Allegation
President Garcia categorically rejects Chile’s alleged espionage case
President Alan García categorically rejected the case of alleged spying for Chile of Peruvian Air Force (FAP) uncommissioned officer Victor Ariza. The president said that the case constitutes a violation of the country’s sovereignty, but noted that this policy would only be driven by certain dictatorial sectors of the Chilean government. García believes that the high cost of the arms race that Chile defends is an insult to the region’s populace. Recently, Chilean media reported that Garcia and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, held a meeting in which the head of the southern state showed "her strong disgust" at the Peruvian government’s actions taken after the news broke. In the morning, Justice Minister Aurelio Pastor stated that Victor Ariza was being held in the Piedras Gordas maximum security prison.
