Drought forces water rationing in 8 Argentine provinces

Eight provinces in Argentina, among these Cordoba, are suffering a drought. The measures taken by the regional government have been extreme. For example, Cordoba raised its penalties for wasting water to $2,890. In Tucuman, where the rivers and dikes are 50% below the average level, the population has been waiting six months for it to rain, and in San Luis it hasn't rained since Feb. In the province of Buenos Aires, the most affected city is Carmen de Patagones, 1,000 kilometers from the Argentine capital, a district which has become a sandy high plateau with huge crop and livestock losses. The Argentine Agrarian Federation has called for rapid government assistance for agricultural producers, especially for livestock producers who have lost close to a million head of cattle.
