Confrontation with the FARC Leaves Nine Soldiers Dead
The combat took place in the Corinto (Cauca) municipality. The government announced a new security strategy after the attack
At least nine soldiers and about thirty guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were killed during combat in the mountainous municipality of Corinto (Cauca), southwestern Colombia, the Army said today. Commander of the XIX Army Brigade, Luis Danilo Murcia, said the conflict took place between Mon. night and early morning Tues. According to the officer, a column of two hundred guerrillas attempted to occupy a hill adjacent to the town of Corinto in order to launch an attack on the populace using long-range weapons. President Álvaro Uribe, after learning about the severity of the attack, stated that a new security strategy for the Cauca department will be developed.
