Reactions After Chavez's Threats
Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez’s statements calling on the military and civilians “to prepare for war” aroused all sorts of reactions in the country

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez’s statements generated great commotions throughout Colombia. According to former president, Ernesto Samper, neither a UN nor OAS mediation can help to overcome the crisis with Venezuela and said that, on the contrary, it would only prove a distraction. For his part, former Colombian Foreign Minister Guillermo Fernandez de Soto, said the steps Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is taking could bring together Colombia and Venezuela’s heads of state. Fernandez added that aside from the heat of the Venezuelan president's speech, the difference in the old problems of the past between the two countries is that now there are "incidents with dead people... that's what’s worrisome." On Mon. the main border crossing between the two nations still remained open.
