Intermediates to Stop Troubles at the Border
Tachira's governor seeks mediators to avoid bi-national conflict
The governor of Tachira, Cesar Perez Vivas, asked some countries to operate as intermediaries, due to the critical situation that exists at the border, to avoid an armed conflict between Colombia and Venezuela. "In the next few hours we will be asking the governments of Brazil, Chile and Uruguay, in a public letter, to serve as mediators in the conflict between Venezuela and Colombia in order to achieve a solution," said the border state governor, who insisted that international assistance is needed to avert a confrontation. Faced with claims from several Venezuelan officials of his alleged links to paramilitaries, Gov. Perez Vivas said that they have made accusations without evidence. The problems at the border are increasing as trade continues to deteriorate.
