Private Power Companies to Cover Energy Deficit
The government will ask energy companies to contribute their spare energy
The Venezuelan government will ask private sector companies to contribute excess energy they generate to the national electricity system; if they do not, government institutions may take over and assume the operation. The measure was announced in a Ministry of Electricity resolution, which sanctions the National Electricity Corporation and its subsidiaries, and the state oil company, PDVSA, with the responsibility to maximize the country’s power generation uses and to recover units not used. Corpoelec was instructed to identify ordinary and official persons of private facilities with in excess of two megawatts to maximize their use and, if appropriate, provide energy to the national electricity system. Venezuela faces an electricity sector crisis and some areas suffer constant blackouts, despite it being a country that boasts resources of oil, gas, water and other mineral wealth.
