As the self-described savior of America’s middle-class, CNN anchor Lou Dobbs has been using the immigration debate to raise his own stock. But at what point did ratings become more important than the quality of reporting for “the most trusted name in news”?

Lou Dobbs, the CNN television anchor with strong feelings about illegal immigration and immigrants, will not be running for governor of New Jersey any time soon. “I’m the wrong personality type,” he recently informed the media, which was already aware of this drawback. Although Lou was prudent enough to add that such a hurdle might be eventually overcome. “I cannot say: Never,” he said.
Those who know him well, however, say it’s all balderdash. Lou’s just a tease.
“He fans the flames of these gossipy items. He has an astute mind when it comes to P.R. or promoting the brand, so he’ll say things like, ‘Never say never,’ ” says one astute Lou-watcher, “when he might not be thinking about running at all.”
Others aren’t so sure about the limits of Lou’s ambition, even at age 62. Try telling Lou’s targets that Lou’s just kidding around when he ponders a political future. In late June I phoned the National Council of La Raza, the Hispanic advocacy group, and heard the distinct sound of the rending of garments. “I’m hearing rumors he’s running for governor!” Lisa Navarrete, La Raza’s communications director declared mournfully. “He’s mad at [Democratic Gov.] Jon Corzine, so he wants to run.”
Since the words “Lou” and “mad” so often go together, it should come as no surprise that last November an even more explosive rumor had it that Lou was angry enough to run for president. This rumor was promulgated on Lou’s website—by Lou, who wrote: “More Americans than ever before are now identifying themselves as independents... I believe that next election’s surprise will be the election of a man or woman of great character, vision and accomplishment, a candidate who has not yet entered the race.”
Naturally, everyone assumed that this independent but tragically invisible presidential candidate described by Lou was... Lou. First, because two years ago, as election board records in Sussex County, New Jersey show, Lou switched from Republican to Independent. Second, because as the Wall Street Journal reported at the time, “Friends of Mr. Dobbs say he is seriously contemplating a race for the first time...” and everyone knows how to translate the beginning of that sentence.
And finally, it was whispered, maybe Lou simply wanted to toy with the notion of running for Something Big in order to improve his mood, which is, to put it mildly, famously variable. By then it was well known he didn’t get along with CNN president Jon Klein who, word had it, “hates Lou’s politics” and occasionally causes Lou’s paper-thin skin to break out in a rash.
Two months after discarding his presidential ambitions, Lou got into what was described at the time as “a huge screaming fight” with Klein over the air time he was allotted during the Iowa caucus. After that dust-up, Lou “refused to go on set at the last minute,” and stomped off. Lou declined to comment on this dispute when I asked him about it.
In other words CNN, home of—as it keeps reminding us—“The best political team on television,” occasionally signals that it considers Lou Dobbs Tonight the trailer park section of its nightly real estate package. Or, if you will, the Marvel comic book section of its library. Just months ago, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein said something to that effect to Klein (Lou won’t tell me exactly what). But it couldn’t have been Blankfein’s personal plea for an autographed 5x7 glossy of the anchorman, because when word of the meeting came back to Lou, it really lit a fuse.
“Perhaps Lloyd would like to come on here and show me the error of my ways and educate me from his lofty Wall Street perch on how millions of Americans are failing and what their prospects are!” Lou hissed over the airwaves. “Lloyd...I would love to have you do it. I would love to have you come on and talk to my face and not to my back, partner. I know it’s not the way you do it on Wall Street there, hot shot, but try it here.”
Right now Lou’s prospects are perfectly good, especially in a material way. From CNN he receives a reported annual salary of $6 million, and that’s not counting what he gets for his recently inaugurated radio show or his best-selling books (Independents Day: Awakening the National Spirit, being his latest). Nonetheless there are problems. In late May, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama told a California crowd: “There’s a reason why hate crimes against Hispanic people doubled last year. If you have people like Lou Dobbs and Rush Limbaugh ginning things up, it’s not surprising that would happen.”
When asked how he likes being lumped with Limbaugh, Lou declined to respond. But it is a fact that he is about as unhappy with Obama as Obama is with him. When in March the Democratic presidential aspirant received the endorsement of Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, for example, Lou couldn’t resist wondering, “Is Obama pandering to ethnocentric special interests again?”
It is important to remember that shrewd though he is at selling himself, those who know Lou claim—as one of their number recently informed me—“I really think he believes all the shit he’s up there saying. It’s not a persona as much as you may think.”
“He went from journalist to knuckle-dragging cartoon character,” is how Frank Sherry, who has worked for years on immigration reform, characterizes him. In an earlier incarnation, the Washington-based Sherry was head of the National Immigration Forum, a center-left group supporting bipartisan immigration reform. Initially, he knew Lou as a television anchor who was, he says, “tough but not mean.” The two men often disagreed on issues (Lou accused Sherry early on of “selling out labor”), but they maintained civil relations whenever Sherry appeared on the CNN show. Last year all that changed.
Sherry was waiting to appear on Lou Dobbs Tonight in CNN’s Washington studio; he was miked, so he could hear everything. Right before air time, Sherry heard word that Lou had just walked into CNN’s New York studio, from which the show airs.
“Who am I on with?” Lou wanted to know. He was told it was Sherry. “And next thing I know I hear this low familiar voice, Lou’s voice, coming over the mike. And it’s addressing me, saying, ‘You Communist bastard!’” Sherry recalls. “I started laughing. But Lou wasn’t laughing at all.” Sherry has watched what he calls “Lou’s devolution” for some time, and he doesn’t understand the anchor’s presence on a reputable network. “CNN should be ashamed of itself,” he says flatly.
And maybe CNN is feeling a tad abashed. As a source who knows the situation puts it, on the one hand, sure the network “feels squeamish about Lou Dobbs,” because of the famously wacky remarks made by a whole assortment of people on his show. Among them: the totally fallacious pronouncements that illegal aliens are responsible for a massive surge in this country of leprosy (7,000 cases! In three years!), as well as voter fraud; and the equally incorrect remark—this from Lou—that “just about a third of the prison population... is estimated to be illegal aliens.” The usual estimate is 21 percent. Robert Sampson, the chairman of the sociology department from Lou’s old alma mater has said that illegal immigrants are “disproportionately less likely to be involved in many acts of deviance, crime... that imperil our well-being.”
On the other hand—and what a winning hand it is—this stuff sells. According to CNN’s latest numbers, Lou’s ratings numbers are up 39 percent from this time last year, meaning he now has 887,000 viewers. That makes him the second highest rated show on CNN after Larry King, who has almost 1.2 million nightly fans—and during the wintry primary season, Lou exceeded a million viewers, almost touching King. So never mind how many alien lepers are conjured up on his program: as a source who knows Lou explains, “CNN is not about to dump its second-highest rated show.”
Of course I don’t really mean to compare the ratings engendered by Lou last year with those garnered by Lou this year. That would be somewhat misleading since for most of 2007, Lou’s show started one hour earlier at 6 p.m., when the audience is traditionally smaller. But then misleading, as Lou knows, is the name of the game.
