$909 Million in Census-Based Aid Here
According to a new report from the Brookings Institution, the amount of Census-based aid coming to Broward and Miami-Dade counties each ranked well in the bottom half of the nation's 200 biggest counties.

Miami-Dade County gets about $379.25 per person from the U.S. government based on the Census, according to the report from the Brookings Institution. Broward County gets $524.85 per resident.
Florida, by contrast, gets $901 per resident, better only than Nevada, Virginia and Colorado. Nevada received $742 per person during fiscal year 2008 from the federal government for these programs, compared with $1,469 for the rest of the nation.
The Silver State is dead last in per-capita federal funding for state programs such as health, education and transportation, according to the report released Monday.
“States that are less aggressive are going to lose out,'” Andrew Reamer, a Metropolitan Policy Program Fellow at the Brookings Institution and author of the report, said. “The allocation among states for many programs is based on population counts, or parts of the population like the number of kids in poverty. It's a zero-sum game, so it's in every state's interest to raise its population numbers.'”
The $447 billion in federal funding that was distributed nationally in 2008 went toward health, housing, transportation, education and agriculture.
Reamer also said the reports are important “because they provide information to encourage people to participate in the census.”
“I do get the sense that Medicaid explains a lot,” Reamer said. “Florida, when it comes to covering working parents, is very conservative. The state is not spending a lot of money on Medicaid or children's health insurance relative to other states, but the other result is that it's not getting as much from the federal government.'”

The report ranked the Bradenton-Sarasota area last out of 100 metropolitan areas in receiving federal dollars from programs based on census statistics.
The Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice area received about $231.1 million in 2008, or $336.05 per capita, compared to New York City-Northern New Jersey, the top ranking area in total funding with $40.2 billion, and Albany-Schenectady-Troy, N.Y., the highest per capita area at $5,217.08, according to the report.
Overall numbers show that Florida ranks 48th among the 50 U.S. states in federal assistance in 2008, according to the Brookings study.
The study notes that nearly half a trillion dollars — $446.7 billion — in federal domestic assistance money is tied to census data. With that kind of money tied to one area, the importance on residents filling out their 10-question census form is more important than ever.
A number of local officials, citing the Brookings Institution figure, have stressed how important it is for every household to complete the form and return it.
A 2 percent undercount in Montgomery County could mean the loss of $134 million in federal funding during the next decade, according to the Brookings study. The same undercount could mean losses in other counties: $35 million in Greene, $23 million in Miami, $10 million in Preble, $12 million in Darke and $38 million in Warren.
