10 Americans Detained in Haiti
U.S. diplomats are speaking with Haitian officials as to whether 10 American Baptist church members arrested last week trying to take Haitian children out of the country should be sent back to the U.S. for prosecution.

Haitian police have charged 10 Americans with kidnapping 33 Haitian children and attempting to bring them to an orphanage across the border in the Dominican Republic.
According to Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, the missionaries were from an Idaho church group.
The church members said they were trying to rescue abandoned and traumatized children. Officials said they lacked the proper documents when they were arrested Friday night in a bus with earthquake survivors two months to 12 years old.
The group said its Haitian Orphan Rescue Mission was an effort to help abandoned children by taking them to an orphanage across the border in the Dominican Republic. The members planned to bus up to 100 kids to a 45-room hotel at Cabarete, a beach resort in the Dominican Republic that they were converting into an orphanage.
"We came here simply to help these children and we went to the border based on the approval of the Dominican government to take the children into the Dominican Republic and the pastor entrusting these precious children to our care because his orphanage collapsed and his churches collapsed, and he had nowhere for these children to go," the group's spokeswoman, Laura Silsby said.
The children, some of them sick and dehydrated, were taken to an orphanage run by Austrian-based SOS Children's Villages, which was trying to find their families, said a spokesman there, George Willeit.
The charges came as the UN's food agency prepared to launch a huge food effort targeted at vulnerable women to try to ease some of the chaos surrounding the relief effort.
Haitian Culture and Communications Minister Marie Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue said border police ''saw a bus with a lot of children. Thirty-three children. When asked about the children's documents, they had no documents.''
The 10 missionaries are currently being held in a police station near the airport at Port-Au-Prince.
Church responds
Rev. Clint Henry Sunday denied his Central Valley Baptist Church in Meridian, Idaho, was child trafficking. Five members of the Baptist congregation along with five other Americans have been detained in Haiti following an attempt to bus 33 children into the Dominican Republic.
He urged his tearful congregation to pray to God to "help them as they seek to resist the accusations of Satan."
Henry also told the congregation that the Americans were trying to rescue the children when Haitian officials stopped them at the Dominican border on Friday, saying the group lacked the proper documents.
The church became involved with the "Haitian Orphan Rescue Mission" because the founders of the proposed orphanage for the children, Silsby and Charisa Coulter, were members of its congregation, Henry said.
The 500-member church, where signs taped to large bins on Sunday read "Donations for Haiti," gave several thousand dollars toward the mission, Henry said.

Following the quake, children's rights groups have urged a halt to adoptions until it can be determined that the children have no relatives who can raise them.
Many children in Haitian orphanages have parents who cannot afford to care for them.
The government now requires Prime Minister Bellerive to personally authorize the departure of any child as a way to prevent child trafficking -- though that has not stopped the flow of orphans abroad.

Music producer and rapper Wyclef Jean issued a stern warning to those exploiting children on the devastated island of Haiti:
“My message to the child traffickers in Haiti…I give you my word, we will hunt you Down one by one, and you will be judge with no Mercy,” the Haitian born rapper Tweeted, before lashing out at others who are selling goods like rice and gas at triple the price.
