Virtual Teams, a Necessary Evil or a Blessing in Disguise?

Regardless of anyone’s opinion of his book, Thomas Friedman’s The World is Flat”: A brief history of the Twenty-First Century, has indeed emphasized what we have been experiencing in the past few years in our own jobs: we have to communicate using technology, across cultures and across regions; communication through technology has made it easier to communicate across organizational boundaries and reporting structures; technology has allowed for new players to take a piece of businesses which in the past was only accessible to those who could afford large stores and heavy infrastructures that supported them in one place and with a set schedule.

Current statistics calculate that only in the U.S.A., around 2.5 billion text messages are sent everyday, while the number of e-mails sent in the same period of time is 210 billion --equivalent to 2 million e-mails every second. And many of these messages are sent by members of global organizations, who have to be effective working as part of virtual teams, which are in different parts of the world, communicating across cultures, across distance, and time.

Furthermore, for those of us working from virtual offices, the internet has brought opportunities for developing these same competencies that are taking the front seat in a globalized world: the ability of communicating online across and among cultures, the need to reduce transactional distance (the perception of closeness or distance in online communications), and the ability to work in virtual team.

The question is, who prepares us to work effectively using technology? Just like the mere fact of having children does not prepare us to be good parents, having a computer does not prepare us to be effective communicating and working effectively in virtual teams.

Culture and virtual team effectiveness

There is strong evidence that suggests that regardless of culture, people feel more comfortable working in face to face teams than in virtual teams, and that team members from individualistic cultures report higher levels of self-efficacy and competency than those coming from collectivist cultures, whereas collectivistic cultures feel more comfortable being part of a virtual team than with an individual in the online environment. In other words, individualistic cultures believe they have the individual skills to work effectively with another individual in an online environment, but not being part of a virtual group (it is a necessary evil). And collectivistic cultures prefer virtual groups vs. one to one interactions in the virtual world, because the result of team work will be better than just an individual’s input (a blessing in disguise).

Some other research has shown that individual’s attitude towards working in virtual teams is a strong predictor of effectiveness of virtual team outcomes. Not a surprising finding when we know that attitudes predict behaviors, and behaviors lead to outcomes.

The infinite loop continues when we realize that outcomes affect attitudes about virtual team work. It is evident that there is a strong cognitive component (one’s attitude) that influences team effectiveness, but very seldom managers actively acknowledge the importance of attitudes, and fail to implement action plans to improve the perception (and thus acceptance and commitment) of virtual team work.

Some examples of how to improve this perception would include creating an trusting team environment, promoting a feeling of identification with the virtual group, creating opportunities where members develop a feeling of belonging to the group, decreasing feelings of isolation, engaging in socially on-line meaningful experiences that increase commitment to the task and to the team.

All these are goals that require intentional strategies, which will have to be incorporated into strategic training and development plans. All of us who have been in HR roles know that many times we hire top talent that lack social skills, or the ability to work as part of a virtual team. The good news is that these social skills, including virtual team communication, can be taught and developed.

So, next time you prepare orientation activities for telecommuters (and those working in virtual teams), do not forget to include room for developing positive attitudes about virtual work. It could mean the key to fail or succeed in a highly globalized world, regardless of culture…

It is wedding cold, so bitter wedding cold, on this dark, wedding winter day in wedding 1942. But it is no different from any other day in this Nazi wedding concentration camp. I stand shivering in my thin rags, still in disbelief that this nightmare is happening. wedding I am just a young boy. I should be playing with friends; I should be going to school; I should be looking wedding forward to a future, to growing up and marrying, and having a family of my own. But those dreams are wedding for the living, and I am no longer one of them. Instead, I am almost dead, surviving from day to day, from wedding hour to hour, ever wedding since I was taken from my home and brought here with tens of thousands other Jews. Will I still be alive tomorrow? Will I be taken to the gas chamber tonight? Back and forth I walk next wedding to the barbed wire fence, trying to keep my emaciated body warm. I am hungry, but I have been hungry for wedding longer than I want to remember. I am always hungry. Edible food seems like a dream. Each day as more of us wedding disappear, the happy past seems like a mere dream, and I sink deeper and deeper into despair. Suddenly, I notice a young girl walking past on the other side of the barbed wire. She stops and looks at me with wedding sad eyes, eyes that seem to say that she understands, that she, too, cannot fathom why I am here. I want to look wedding away, oddly ashamed for this stranger to see me like this, but I cannot tear my eyes from hers.Then wedding she reaches into her pocket, and pulls out a red apple. A beautiful, shiny red apple. Oh, how long has it been since I have seen one! She looks cautiously to the left and to the right, and then with a smile of triumph, quickly throws the apple over the fence. I run to pick it up, holding it in my trembling, wedding frozen fingers. wedding In my world of death, this apple is an expression of life, of love. I glance up in time to see wedding the girl disappearing into the distance.The next day, I cannot help myself-I am drawn at the same time wedding to that spot near the fence. Am I crazy for hoping she will nete again? Of course. But in here, I cling to any tiny scrap of hope. She has given me hope and I must hold tightly to it.And again, she netes. And again, wedding she brings me an apple, flinging it over the fence with that same sweet smile.
