President Obama Sends Kudos to Cuban Blogger
President Barack Obama replied to questions from Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez and praised her for being ‘courageous’ after the attack

In a media coup for Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez, the prize winning journalist managed to interview President Barack Obama on her blog, Generacion Y.
Sanchez, who writes a regular column for PODER Magazine, published the answers Thursday to seven questions she asked Obama. In his written answers, Obama says "the U.S. has started a process of improving relations with Cuba, and stands ready to continue once the Cuban government responds to Washington's overtures". He also said, "the U.S. has no intention of using military force in Cuba, and says that only Cubans can promote peaceful change on the island".
Obama congratulated Yoani on her winning a prestigious Maria Moors Cabot prize in October from Columbia University Journalism School, and lamented she wasn't allowed to travel to New York to receive it. He wrote that he hopes Cuba will open the internet up more to Cubans and says the U.S. stands by to help Cuba upgrade its telecommunications.
"Your blog provides the world a unique window into the realities of daily life in Cuba," Obama said. "It is telling that the Internet has provided you and other courageous Cuban bloggers with an outlet to express yourself so freely, and I applaud your collective efforts to empower fellow Cubans to express themselves through the use of technology."
Meanwhile, Sanchez also published a list of questions she sent Cuban President Raul Castro about Cuba-U.S. relations. No answer yet from the Cuban leader.
Not only was Sanchez getting special attention from the White House, her name also came up Thursday on Capitol Hill at Congressional hearings on lifting restrictions for American travel to Cuba.
Congressman Howard L. Berman (D-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, cited a letter Sanchez wrote for the hearing titled "In the suitcases: A reflection on the necessary liberalization of Americans' travel to Cuba," in which she advocated lifting all restrictions for Americans to travel to Cuba.
"Faced with no evolution of our current political and social situation, an opening of travel for Americans could bring more results in the democratization of Cuba than the indecisive performance of Raul Castro," she wrote. "A gesture that would bring about popular diplomacy - that which isn't done in protocol lounges or foreign ministries, but person to person, face to face, from the intense interaction between people - would awaken citizen consciousness, and would accelerate the sense of belonging to a world community that Cubans lack so much."
She went on:
"If restrictions on coming to Cuba are lifted, Americans would again enjoy a right that has been infringed in recent years - that of traveling freely to any latitude without penalty. Cuban citizens, for our part, would benefit from the injection of material resources and money that these tourists from the north would spend in alternative services networks. Without a doubt, economic autonomy would then result in ideological and political autonomy, in real empowerment."
