The last of CNN’s original anchors, Lou Dobbs stepped down Wednesday night after a 30-year career with the network that brought him acclaim and controversy
Dobbs, the acclaimed and reviled CNN anchor, announced he was leaving the network Wednesday during his 7 p.m. broadcast. Dobbs’ resignation after almost 30 years with the network opened a hole that will now be replaced by CNN political correspondent John King, the network announced Thursday.
The news of Dobbs’ resignation was met with open arms by Latino organizations that had mounted a national campaign to pressure CNN into sacking the former financial news journalist turned political commentator.
Dobbs said he and CNN President Jonathan Klein agreed to a release of his contract after extensive talks and would now look to pursue a more active role.
"Over the past six months, it has become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us, and some leaders in media, politics and business have been urging me to go beyond the role here at CNN and to engage in constructive problem-solving as well as to contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day," Dobbs said during his last broadcast against the backdrop of an American flag.
Dobbs, who hosts the successful national radio program, “The Lou Dobbs Show,” provided few details about his new role saying that, “at this point, I’m considering a number of options and directions and I assure you I will let you know when I set my course.”
Klein, in a written statement, praised Dobbs for his long CNN career and his dogged pursuance of complex stories.
“All of us will miss his appetite for big ideas, the megawatt smile and larger than life presence he brought to our newsroom,” Klein said. “With characteristic forthrightness, Lou has now decided to carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere.”
Dobbs, 64, joined CNN in 1980 as a sober anchor on “The Moneyline News Hour with Lou Dobbs.” He then went on to host the daily program “Lou Dobbs Tonight” in June 2003.
For his coverage of the 1987 stock market crash Dobbs was awarded the George Foster Peabody award. In 2004, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Dobbs an Emmy for his work covering the outsourcing of U.S. jobs in “Exporting America,” and was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement award in 2005.
But in recent years Dobbs evolved from news anchor to commentator. As an advocate journalist, Dobbs covered issues related to America’s struggling middle class, health care, climate change, and the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Dobbs also tackled illegal immigration issues with passionate, almost acerbic language. As a result of the Texan’s confrontational position, many Latino organizations petitioned CNN to remove him.
Favianna Rodriguez, co-founder of Presente.org, a grass roots movement to dislodge Dobbs from CNN, said removing the anchor from his national platform was a “significant victory for Latinos and immigrants in the United States.”
Months before Wednesday’s announcement, Presente.org used text messages, email, and YouTube videos to denounce Dobbs and CNN. There efforts drew in over 100,000 members. They would eventually bombard the network with messages and even disrupted 18 screenings of the CNN documentary “Latino in America,” Rodriguez said.
The group’s aim was to leverage its membership and the growing Latino population against CNN’s journalistic reputation, and those of its advertisers.
“Our biggest issue with CNN is that they say they are ‘the most trusted name in news.’ If that’s the case, you just can’t have advocacy. That was our campaign: CNN can’t be the most trusted name in news when Lou Dobbs and his brand of advocacy journalism creates a platform for extremists.”
The National Council of La Raza, the largest Latino organization in the country, helped organize BastaDobbs.com. Lisa Navarrete, Vice President of NCLR, said whether Dobbs retired on his own terms or was booted thanks to their efforts was inconsequential. The important thing, she said, was what Latinos learned from this movement.
“He was a big fish in that pond and for him not to be there is going to make a big difference,” Navarrete said. “This shows that when we work towards the same goal we have political clout and economic clout. When we come together things can happen.”
Although among Dobbs’ detractors Latinos were among the most organized and the loudest, his troubles with CNN’s management were heightened this summer when Dobbs questioned the legitimacy of President Obama’s birth certificate. He was also cast as an outlier on a network intent on claiming the neutral ground on cable television.
“Dobbs no longer seemed a fit on CNN, which is trying to hold on to the objective ground, by striving to be, you'll excuse the expression, fair and balanced,” said Mike Hoyt, executive editor of the Columbia Journalism Review. This is challenging for CNN, but it is interesting that when big news events happen, CNN is generally the winner. In those circumstances, people tend to prefer straight reporting.”
